Discover a hidden treasure in Crete: Theodorou Island at Agia Marina

Crete is known for its picturesque beaches, impressive ruins and delicious dining experiences, but few know about the hidden gem, Theodorou Island, located off the coast of Agia Marina. This small island is filled with history, nature and a sense of adventure that will amaze any visitor.

The story behind Theodorou Island:

Theodorou Island is rich in history and myths. According to local folklore, the island was once inhabited by pirates who used its hidden bays and crystal clear waters as a base for their maritime adventures. Later, the island became a refuge for monks seeking tranquility and a connection to the divine. The island wasn't actually called Theodorou to begin with, but was called Akoito (Not suitable for human habitation)

Nature and wildlife:

Today, Theodorou Island is a peaceful natural area, home to a varied wildlife and unique flora. The island is a haven for rare bird species and has an impressive collection of wild flowers and plants. It is also home to the Cretan chamois (also called Kri-Kri), a rare and protected species that roams freely on the island. Visitors have the opportunity to experience the natural beauty once a year (on June 8), by taking one of the small boats that shuttle curious guests to the small island with breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea.

Outdoor life and adventure:

For those seeking adventure, Theodorou Island is an ideal place to explore. You can take a boat trip from Agia Marina and enjoy the short journey to the island. Here you walk the short distance to the island's church Agii Theodori, where there is a smaller ceremony in the minimalist church, where many of the region's priests have gathered on this particular day. If you want to explore the seabed and the fish species around the island, there are excellent snorkelling and diving opportunities, where you will be able to see, among other things, the wreckage of one of the German planes that was shot down and ended up just outside the island, at a depth of only a few meters in the clear waters.

Conservation and sustainability:

Theodorou Island is not only a beautiful natural area, but it is also an area dedicated to conservation and sustainability. Local organizations and authorities are working hard to protect the island's unique ecosystem and ensure it remains a scenic paradise for generations to come. Visitors are encouraged to respect the island's environment and follow the guidelines for sustainable tourism.

A memorable journey:

A day on Theodorou Island doesn't just end when you take the boat back to Agia Marina. It will leave you with memories of untouched nature, history and adventure. This little piece of paradise off the coast of Crete is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered by those looking for a unique experience far away from the usual touristy tracks.
