Holiday atmosphere, beautiful beaches, ancient cities, historical sights and a cuisine out of the ordinary. There's no mistaking the Greek atmosphere, and that's why it's great that you can easily get a piece of Greece, even if the holiday is over and you find yourself at home in Denmark once again.

At Elenas, we have a fondness for Crete, which is the basis of our dream of giving Danes the opportunity to experience Greek culture without actually being in Greece. On this page, you will find our selection of Greek jars, which with their beautiful shapes and antique expressions contribute to just the right atmosphere in your home.

Ancient yet timeless designs from the Minoan Pottery of Crete

The beauty of the Greek jars is that the design is so ancient, yet timeless. It can therefore fit into any decor - regardless of whether it is southern, Nordic or something else entirely. When you choose a Greek jar here at Elenas, you choose a timeless design that you can enjoy for many years.

At Minoan Pottery in Crete, the authentic and ancient Greek jars are produced - and the method has not changed much in the millennia in which the jars have been produced. The jars are fired with organic fuel at around 1050 degrees and are both strong, durable and resistant. We are the exclusive dealers of the unique and handmade Greek jars from Minoan Pottery, and they only get more and more beautiful as they patina.

Outdoor terracotta pots

There is no doubt that Greek jars are the epitome of good jar design. Terracotta pots are a technique that has been known and used for thousands of years – terracotta products have even been found dating back to before the birth of Christ.

Terracotta is available in different colors. In Denmark, we are probably most familiar with the red burnishing, which is often found on jars and flower pots. The firing on the Greek terracotta pots is somewhat lighter and contributes to the right southern atmosphere, which will certainly also decorate Danish gardens or conservatories.

We have a large selection of Greek terracotta pots with a very special cohesion - yet each with its own expression. Are you into a simple expression with a few rings in the terracotta, should your jar have a smooth surface, or do you want a splash of detail? Each jar is handmade and has its own unique look.

Once you have chosen the pots that suit your taste best, you can plant your favorite flowers or smaller trees in them. You can also fill the jars with dried flowers, plaids or the like if you don't have a pair of green fingers.

What is Terracotta?

Terracotta comes from Latin and translates as "burnt earth". The material is a porous clay that is used both on buildings, but also for jars and sculptures. The material is shaped, dried and heated, and here the color is formed from the reaction when the iron content in the clay reacts with the oxygen in the air. Terracotta can be used both glazed and unglazed, but the finished product is only waterproof if it has been glazed.

The reason why this particular clay is so popular is that the material can be found everywhere across continents. At the same time, terracotta has a valued strength and low prices, which also make it desirable for production.

Get the Greek atmosphere at home in the garden

Due to the ancient history of terracotta pots, no one really knows where they originally came from. However, everything indicates that the Greeks began production 5,000-8,000 years ago, and you can still get the Greek atmosphere in your garden today with just these jars.

It is not only the terracotta clay that supports the Greek atmosphere in your garden. It is just as much about the shape and the many details, which lead the mind straight to a Greek front garden with a multitude of olive trees.

Let your Greek jars decorate the terrace, in front of the front door or on the grass under the cherry tree. You can also implement your Greek jar in the decor indoors or in the conservatory, where it will fit into any style.

The terracotta material has a certain strength, and the jars in the selection here at Elenas are frost-proof . Still, it's a good idea to move them indoors if the winter's frost gets too hard, and they are annual plants after all. When spring approaches, you can once again plant in your Greek pots and move them out into the garden for a new season.
