What is Kalamata?

Kalamata is a town in the southern Peloponnese, where the popular Kalamata olive originates. The popular olive variety is characterized by being large and fleshy and dark in colour. Kalamata olives can either be black or have brownish and purple hues. Kalamata is often confused with the Kalamon olive, but Kalamon is often slightly smaller and more burgundy. Both Kalamata and Kalamon are very fleshy and have a mild and pleasant taste.
