Pomegranates originally come from the Middle East, but are also grown in several places in Greece. In Elenas, we mainly source our pomegranates in Crete, where the decorative and tasty fruits sit on bushy trees that can grow up to 3-5 meters high. The skin can be yellow, green or orange depending on the variety, but they have in common that they are shaped a bit like an onion.
The pomegranate's fruit seeds, which look like small pomegranates, taste sweet and sour and are very juicy. They can be used for salads, garnishes for yoghurt, as healthy sweets, juices, desserts, jams and much more, but are also excellent as a topping for fried meat, boiled and fried fish. You can also boil the juice and make a wonderful syrup from it.
Pomegranates are also used as a decoration (especially at Christmas time) where they stay nice for several weeks at room temperature. During that storage, the pulp dries and makes the fruit inedible.
Pomegranates are high in vitamins with almost 40 times as many antioxidants as a regular apple. Therefore, it is also said that pomegranates strengthen the immune system and help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Storage and shelf life:
On receipt, you should review the received fruit and check that the pomegranates are intact and whole. If you find pomegranates that are cracked in the shell, we advise you to use these first, as they may be bruised and thus have a shorter shelf life.
As these are natural fruits, of course we cannot promise or guarantee any kind of shelf life. However, we advise that you store your pomegranates in airtight packaging in a dark and cool place (preferably a fridge). It will give the best result, and for some, several weeks of shelf life. However, care should be taken to regularly check the fruits and remove any bad, so they don't pass it on to the other fruits.
